Incense for the fallen

Visitors honour fallen soldiers at
the HCM City Martyrs’ Cemetery

On Wednesday, 731 sets of remains of heroic martyrs recovered in Lê Thị Riêng Cultural Park were brought to HCM City Martyrs’ Cemetery.

Since then, many have visited the cemetery to pay tribute to those who gave their lives for the nation's peace.

On Saturday morning, a delegation from the Party Committee and the High Command of the Border Guard Force attended a solemn ceremony to honour President Hồ Chí Minh and the fallen soldiers.

Officials offer their salutes and incense in front of the Monument to the Heroic Vietnamese Mother and the graves of martyrs.

Afterwards, waves of visitors poured into the burial site of the martyrs, each gravestone adorned with the national flag of Việt Nam.

Groups of co-workers, families, friends and even tourists from other localities offered incense and flowers to the heroes.

Some brought flowers and incense to give away to visitors.

From young to old, everyone showed their respect and gratitude.

Đào Duy Minh from Tăng Nhơn Phú Ward brought his children to visit the graves of martyrs, instilling in them the spirit of patriotism and appreciation.

"I follow the news on the 500-day campaign to search, recover and identify the remains of martyrs very closely. My children wanted to visit the cemetery on Wednesday but couldn't, so we took the time to go here on the weekend instead."

When asked about the campaign to recover the martyrs' remains, veteran Hồ Văn Lộc from Tân Bình Ward expressed happiness that the fallen soldiers are reunited with their comrades here.

"So many 20-something years old soldiers gave their lives away. Back then, even I wasn't sure that I would come back alive."

"War is such a cruel thing."

To him, the sight of young people taking the time to pay tribute is a heart-warming one.

HCM City authorities will continue their efforts to recover and identify the remains of fallen soldiers in Lê Thị Riêng Park and other areas.

And the people of HCM City will certainly continue to honour the ones that had helped them enjoy the peace today. — VNS
