High- and low-altitude fireworks were launched across 16 locations to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the renaming the city (Sài Gòn-Gia Định) after the late President Hồ Chí Minh, one of Việt Nam's most important leaders.
The show began at 9pm and lasted 15 minutes, and it is part of the city-wide celebratory activities to honour the momentous occasion, which also included parades, art exhibitions and a 3D Mapping show at the People's Committee building.
Huge crowds of locals, expats and tourists gathered across many localities of HCM City to witness the spectacle, eagerly taking photos with their loved ones.
Tyler Rodriguez (in white shirt), a tourist from Australia, said he and his friends heard about this event from their Airbnb. They found the firework show to be very pretty, and were happy that the city is doing something like this for this grand occasion.

"This event marks a really important milestone for HCM City and its citizens, including me. I hope the government continues to organise these celebration events so that people can better understand their roots," said Nguyễn Ngọc Minh Thư, a Bình Lợi Trung Ward resident.
